Continuum BacterGen MD
The Continuum advantage.
BacterGen•MD is a breakthrough in microbial cultures and is specifically designed to establish anaerobic bacteria populations in denitrators and anoxic zones (those zones that are depleted in dissolved oxygen), such as internal pores in live rock and to establish anoxic slime layers within all zones, even within zones otherwise saturated with oxygen. BacterGen•MD does this by developing layers of bacterial slime to prevent oxygen availability to anaerobic microbes thereby encouraging denitration by conversion of nitrates to nitrogen gas. Whereas most competing products are designed primarily for freshwater aquariums, and most don't do much to address nitrate reduction, BacterGen•MD will quickly generate effective anoxic zones and encourage beneficial denitrifying bacterial populations in seawater. Whereas competing products may increase the production of toxic hydrogen sulfide in the system, and denitrators, particularly those utilizing alcohol or sugar for fuel are known for hydrogen sulfide production, BacterGen•MD is non-sulfur fixing and will reduce hydrogen sulfide levels.
Use in aquarium keeping.
BacterGen•MD is designed to seed new denitrators, as well as to form anoxic zones in other areas of marine aquariums. When seeding new denitrators, or re-starting an old unit, it is best to do this off line. Clean old denitrators first, to remove any buildup of organic material so that bacteria have clean surfaces for attachment. Fill the unconnected denitrator with aquarium water, then add this product. Since the bacteria will have no food, it is necessary to also add equal amounts of Reef Micro•Fuel, along with the BacterGen•MD, as an organic carbon source to accelerate the growth and maintenance of the new bugs. Let denitrator stand for 12 hours for establishment of new populations. IMPORTANT: Dispose of water in seeded denitrator and refill with fresh seawater from the aquarium. Place on line. CAUTION: adjust dripping system or system flow control for a very low level to start, and increase gradually per manufacturer's instructions. Follow addition protocol immediately for direct addition of both BacterGen•MD and Reef Micro•Fuel. Denitrator will still require time to fully cycle, although this time will be greatly reduced.
Directions and protocol.
Place 1 cup (250 ml) of marine aquarium water into a container. Shake product well. Add the recommended amount (see below) of capfuls or ml of BacterGen•MD to the container of aquarium water. Stir and allow to stand for a few minutes. Add to aquarium in desired location. It is usually best to add to denitrator intake if used, or in a low flow area that will lead directly to the denitration filter, but do not add directly to a pump intake. In reef aquaria, add around the porous liverock, also. In denitrators, see use instructions on other sidebar. BacterGen•MD may be used simultaneously with BacterGen•M. In this case reduce the dose of each product by half. To get the most out of this product, the use of Reef Micro•Fuel simultaneously is highly recommended.
Recommended amounts.
Directly to the aquarium for Medium to heavily loaded aquariums to reduce nitrates: 1 capful (5 ml) of BacterGen•MD for every 50 US gallons (100 L) of aquarium volume daily as necessary.
Directly to the aquarium for Low nutrient aquariums or for maintenance of established aquariums: 1 capful (5 ml) of BacterGen•MD for every 100 US gallons (200 L) of aquarium volume once or twice a week or 1 to 2 ml per day.
New Denitration Filters: 1 capful (5 ml) of BacterGen•MD for every 100 US gallons (200 L) of aquarium volume and an equal amount of Reef Micro•Fuel directly to the filter, as directed above.
Caution: Keep out of reach of children. Not for human consumption. Contains non-pathogenic microbes. If in eyes flush with water, if irritation continues, seek medical attention.
